Microsoft (MSFT.O) announced it will invest an additional approximately $2 billion in the Middle East Gulf region, marking the company's first update on its business footprint in the area since the outbreak of the U.S.-Iran conflict. Microsoft said it will invest $10 billion by 2030 in four Gulf countriesSaudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAEincluding the $7.9 billion investment plan for the UAE announced last year. Microsoft President Brad Smith said the new investment will go toward cloud computing operations, artificial intelligence, and data center operations, including capital expenditures and operating expenses. About $400 million of that will be used for submarine cables and related infrastructure to enhance network resilience and data transmission capacity. Microsoft previously also invested $1.5 billion in UAE technology company G42 and participated in the construction of local AI data centers. However, during the Iran conflict, multiple data centers were affected, and Amazon recently disclosed that some data in certain damaged facilities in the UAE and Bahrain could not be recovered.
