Citi Research said in a report that Asian equity positioning remains structurally skewed short, with the Nikkei still the most heavily shorted market. Global equity positioning continued to weaken as investors adopted a more defensive stance. The common theme across regions over the past week was an almost continuous return of short positions. In Asia, short positioning in both the Nikkei and South Korea's KOSPI is elevated, while long participation remains limited. This creates an asymmetric setup in which even a modest positive catalyst could trigger a sharp short-covering rally, particularly for the Nikkei and KOSPI.
