People familiar with the matter say Malaysia Airlines' parent company is close to finalizing an order for Boeing 787 Dreamliners to renew its long-haul fleet. The people said Malaysia Aviation Group may order about 10 787-10s. The new 787s would replace the seven Airbus A350s the airline leases, while also leaving room for future expansion. Boeing beat out Airbus with an earlier delivery slot starting in 2031, and GE Aerospace offered better engine terms than Rolls-Royce, the people said. Separately, Malaysia Airlines has been looking to replace the A350s because of high leasing costs, and in this order the airline evaluated aircraft from both manufacturers. The deal also carries political overtones, as U.S. President Donald Trump has linked Boeing orders to trade agreements he has signed with multiple countries. Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced last year that Malaysia would buy 30 Boeing aircraft, with options for another 30.
