GM adjusts its infotainment strategy, will reintroduce CarPlay split-screen feature in pickup models.
According to reports, after announcing three years ago that it would remove Apple CarPlay from its electric vehicles, General Motors is adjusting its in-vehicle infotainment system strategy and will reintegrate CarPlay and Android Auto into its latest system. The new system uses a split-screen design, allowing drivers to display key vehicle instrument information such as tire pressure, fuel gauge, and Super Cruise while using phone projection, in order to reduce screen switching. Michael Walstrom, executive director of GM's Connected Apps and Services, said the solution was jointly developed by GM, Apple, and Google, aiming to integrate the projection experience with the native system. The new interface will debut first on the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, and is planned to roll out to future models. Although GM had previously planned to gradually expand its strategy of removing CarPlay to gasoline-powered models, Walstrom declined to say whether the feature would be reintroduced on electric vehicles. Currently, GM is providing the Apple Music app through Apple's official protocol for electric vehicles that cannot connect to CarPlay.
