Google spent $10 million to acquire the data of a bankrupt company.
According to documents from the U.S. bankruptcy court, Google won a bid for $10 million, defeating the artificial intelligence training data giant Mercor, and will acquire a substantial amount of data from the bankrupt company Spirit Airlines. Google is expected to use this data to train its AI models. The data includes over 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams chat logs, 30 million lines of code, development metadata, software models and algorithms, as well as data on revenue, aircraft operations, and employee productivity, which will be handed over to Google. However, consumer data is not expected to be acquired by Google. Google stated that all personal identifiable information will be strictly removed by a third party before the data is received, and Google will not re-identify users. This transaction still requires approval from a federal judge, and if the deal fails, the second-highest bidder Mercor might obtain Spirit Airlines internal data, with Mercor's bid being $7.5 million.
