Google has won in the bankruptcy auction, acquiring a large amount of desensitized business data, software code, and operational records from the bankrupt budget airline Spirit Airlines Holdings, stating that it will use these assets to improve artificial intelligence. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York announced on August 14 that Google's $10 million bid covers the massive data from the collapsed airline: 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams chats and collaboration records, as well as revenue, aircraft operations, employee productivity, audit, and fraud-related information. Court documents show that this transaction does not include personal information or privileged data, such as Spirit Airlines' 97.5 million passenger records and about 50.2 million loyalty program records. The court filings indicate that all data will be processed to remove associations with specific customers. Google stated on Monday that the company will not acquire any personal information, and all personally identifiable information will be strictly removed by a third party before the data is transferred.
