Manufacturing activity in New York State experienced its fastest expansion since the end of 2021 in August.
In August, manufacturing activity in New York State experienced its fastest expansion since the end of 2021, driven by order growth and a strong backlog of orders. Data released on Monday showed that the overall business conditions index for manufacturing from the New York Federal Reserve rose by 5 points to 20.6. This figure above zero indicates that manufacturing is expanding. The median forecast from economists surveyed by Bloomberg was 10. The outlook index for overall business conditions over the next six months also increased, with the new orders expectations index reaching its highest level since 2022. This year, the momentum in U.S. manufacturing has strengthened, consumer demand has shown resilience, and business investment has remained robust, particularly in areas related to artificial intelligence development. However, businesses also face challenges from rising raw material prices due to the conflict in Iran and the uncertainty surrounding the duration of the conflict. The indicator measuring current unfilled orders jumped 10.5 points to 15.5, the highest level since April 2022. Additionally, the indicator measuring current raw material payment prices rose for the first time since May, while the received prices index declined.
