Due to the continued decline of the Danube River water level, Romania's only nuclear power plant has ceased operation.

On August 13 local time, Romania's nuclear power company announced that, in light of the significant and ongoing decrease in the water level of the Danube River, the country has officially initiated the controlled shutdown procedure for Unit 2 of the Cernavod Nuclear Power Plant. Local nuclear power station experts will determine the timing for reconnecting to the grid based on future forecasts of the Danube River water level. Due to the rare low water levels, Unit 1 of the nuclear power plant was already subjected to a controlled shutdown in late July.
