Today, emerging market stocks rose, led by Asian chip stocks, as impressive earnings from AI infrastructure companies reignited interest in technology shares. With U.S. inflation data set to be released later today, emerging market currencies showed mixed results. The MSCI Emerging Markets Stock Index climbed 1.1%, with Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and TSMC making the largest contributions. The Emerging Market Currency Index rose 0.1%, as the dollar weakened against most major currencies. The South African rand and Hungarian forint led the gains, while the Indonesian rupiah and South Korean won lagged behind. A team led by Citigroup strategist Luis Costa stated in a report that U.S. inflation data is the "most closely watched factor" for traders, while the "surge in earnings reports from AI companies continues to shape risk appetite." They noted, "The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remains a real tail risk."
