New Swedish Study: RNA Preconditioning May Enhance Pancreas Transplant Efficiency

Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden have developed a targeted RNA technology that allows for the brief pre-treatment of pancreatic islet cells before transplantation. This method may help to expedite the reconstruction of blood supply after transplantation and is expected to reduce the number of donor islets needed. Experiments conducted on diabetic mice confirmed that, compared to mice transplanted with untreated islets, those that received pre-treated islets had a greater number of surviving and functionally active pancreatic cells, along with better glucose control. The researchers believe that if further studies confirm its safety and efficacy, this RNA pre-treatment technique could enhance the utilization efficiency of limited donor islets, benefiting more patients. Additionally, this technology may also be applicable to improve the outcomes of other types of cell transplants. The relevant findings have been published in the international academic journal "Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy."
