Trump once again calls for Cook to resign, challenging the independence of the Federal Reserve.

The White House wrote to Cook this week, stating that Trump is "considering" removing her from her position and demanding a response within three weeks regarding unverified mortgage fraud allegations. The letter, signed by Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, accuses Cook of committing crimes punishable by up to 30 years in prison, claiming her actions constitute serious misconduct that has already damaged her credibility as a Federal Reserve Board member. Cook's lawyer subsequently issued a statement asserting that there is no legal basis for removing Cook from her position. "As before, we will contest this new excuse to uphold her position and defend the historic institutional role of the Federal Reserve."
