A White House advisor stated that Trump often discusses the economy with Walsh and that the President respects the independence of the Federal Reserve.
Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council, stated that President Donald Trump frequently discusses the economy with Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh. This statement from the White House's top economic advisor on Friday further revealed the content and extent of Warsh's conversations with Trump since assuming the position of Fed chairman in May. Hassett indicated that he did not participate in these calls, but he is confident that the president would not pressure the Fed chairman regarding interest rate decisions. Kevin Warsh has had a close relationship with the president for a long time; they interact in both New York and Florida and have always discussed the economy, Hassett said in an interview. I also communicate with Kevin, and Scott Basset does too, so this is really not news. Hassett stated that Trump respects the independence of the Federal Reserve. Previous presidents and Federal Reserve chairs have also communicated and met, though it is not common. Typically, the primary liaison between the Fed chair and the government is the Secretary of the Treasury, who has breakfast with the Fed chair almost weekly. The Fed chair also regularly communicates with the Director of the National Economic Council. The fact is, now the Federal Reserve has a president who is 100 percent confident in making the right decisions based on data and wont engage in partisan politics, Hassett said.
