A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $567 million.

The court has ordered Meta to pay $567 million to a special relief fund to address the damages suffered by young people's mental health. This ruling was issued by Chief Judge Brian Beersheid of the district court on Thursday. In his opinion, the judge wrote, "Although the issue is not exclusive to Meta, substantial evidence in this case confirms that its social media platforms are significant contributors to the current mental health crisis among teenagers in New Mexico." He noted, "Meta deliberately designs its platforms to maximize user engagement, and some of these mechanisms can harm teenagers, while failing to adequately disclose the associated risks to users." This relief fund is in addition to the $375 million civil penalty imposed in the earlier stage of the trial. The first stage of the trial primarily focused on whether Meta's actions violated the state's Unfair Practices Act.
