Google reported that ransomware hackers targeted dozens of major financial institutions in the United States, using phone social engineering tactics to steal employee account credentials. The hackers set up a fake IT service desk website, with targets including Blackstone Group, Apollo Global Management, KKR, TPG, Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group, Moody's, Bridgewater Associates, and Bain Capital, among others. Google stated that some of the affected companies have paid ransoms, but did not disclose which specific companies. This attack activity did not rely on advanced hacking techniques, but rather deceived employees into revealing their passwords and multi-factor authentication codes.
