Google's parent company Alphabet (GOOGL.O) announced a major leadership reshuffle in its artificial intelligence department on Wednesday. AI head Demis Hassabis is stepping down from key management positions, and several leaders of the Gemini model, including senior engineer Jeff Dean, are leaving one after another. This personnel change comes at a critical moment for Google DeepMind: its flagship version of the latest Gemini model was originally scheduled for release in June but has yet to debut, raising concerns among investors and the industry that Google is falling behind its competitors Anthropic and OpenAI, both of which poached a star AI employee from Google earlier this summer. Hassabis will take on the newly established role of Chief Scientist at Alphabet, transitioning from CEO of Google DeepMind to Chairman. The department's Chief Technology Officer, Koray Kavukcuoglu, will take over the day-to-day management, serving as Senior Vice President of the division while continuing to hold the position of Chief AI Architect at Alphabet.
