Centralized cooling is being trialed in Xuzhou, Jiangsu.

During the hot days of summer, a neighborhood in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, can maintain an indoor temperature of around 25 degrees Celsius without air conditioning. This cooling effect comes from an abandoned coal mine, where the mine water has a constant temperature of around a dozen degrees Celsius year-round. Now, this water flows through the heating pipes of the community, benefiting nearly 100 households with underfloor heating. What was once a resource-depleting "burden" has turned into a "natural cooling source" for residents. According to reports, this system can also extract heat from the mine water through heat pump technology to provide centralized heating in winter, achieving seamless heating through the same pipes year-round.
