According to a report by Bloomberg on July 31, the U.S. Department of Defense's emergency funding request of $67 billion for the current fiscal year includes over $10 billion for the purchase of the most advanced American "Patriot" missiles and the "THAAD" missile defense system. According to documents drafted by the Pentagon and submitted to the defense committees of both houses of Congress, these funds will be used to procure $5.75 billion worth of "THAAD" missiles and to purchase an additional $5.57 billion worth of "Patriot" missiles with segmented enhancements. In addition, the Pentagon's procurement list includes $1.9 billion worth of "Standard-6" missiles and $1.3 billion worth of "Tomahawk" cruise missiles, as well as $692 million for procuring precision strike missiles that were first used in the conflict in Iran. The report states that as the U.S. military strikes Iran and intercepts drone and missile attacks aimed at U.S. bases in the Middle East, concerns about the status of U.S. weapon stockpiles have also emerged. U.S. lawmakers, Pentagon officials, and analysts have indicated that the current inventory of these weapons is at a dangerously low level.
