US lawmakers are calling on the US Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate Truth Social's data commercialization plan.
New York State Democratic federal congressman Ritchie Torres has written to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission requesting an investigation into whether the parent company of Truth Social, a platform founded by former President Donald Trump, is violating federal securities laws by selling real-time access to Trump's posts to Wall Street institutions. This letter signifies an escalation in regulatory scrutiny of Trump's media and technology group's plans. The group intends to sell preferred access to Trump's posts with market influence to institutional investors in order to monetize this access. The Trump Media and Technology Group are launching a new product called Truth API, scheduled to go live on August 1st, which can access public posts from the top ten accounts on the platform in real time. The group's executives have presented this service to the public, with a maximum monthly licensing fee of $100,000. Interim CEO Kevin MacGowan stated that in the future, for a higher fee, the API can be expanded to access data from more accounts if the customer is willing to pay.
