The number of people in Germany refused to serve in the military has dramatically increased.

According to the German magazine "Der Spiegel" website on July 13th, the number of people applying for conscientious objection to military service continues to increase significantly. German media cited information from the German Federal Office for Family Affairs and Civil Society that in the first half of 2026, the number of people applying for conscientious objection to military service in Germany has exceeded the total for the entire year of 2011. Germany suspended compulsory military service in 2011. As of June 30, the German Federal Office for Family Affairs and Civil Society had received 5,862 applications for conscientious objection to military service. In comparison, in 2025 there were 3,867 applications and in 2011 there were 4,348.
