Microsoft's new head of security business, Hayete Gallot, is restructuring a security department of over ten thousand people. At least 8 senior executives under former leaders have been replaced, and hundreds of positions have been cut in recent layoffs. Microsoft is shifting resources towards Security Copilot, code vulnerability scanning, and AI Agent management tools. Traditional threat detection products like Sentinel will see reduced investment, while core endpoint security product Defender gets higher priority. Microsoft is also leveraging Anthropic's AI security products. The new tool MDASH, which can call multiple models to automatically identify vulnerabilities, has been used to inspect Windows. Microsoft patched a record 622 vulnerabilities in July, with some of the increase coming from MDASH. This round of adjustments directly targets enterprise concerns about AI attacks. Microsoft hopes to drive growth with AI security tools while avoiding losing new budget to Anthropic and OpenAI.
