The BHP Group announced that its iron ore production reached a record high in the past year, but copper production has decreased. The company predicts that due to the declining grade of a large mine in northern Chile, copper production will further decline in the coming year. Headquartered in Australia, BHP Billiton, the world's largest mining company by market value, reported that in the year ending June 30, its copper production was 1.95 million tons, a 3% decrease compared to the previous year. The company stated that the total iron ore production was 264.7 million tons, a 1% increase compared to the previous year; and coking coal production was 18.6 million tons, a 3% increase. BHP Billiton had previously forecasted an annual copper production of 1.9 to 2 million tons, while analysts surveyed by Visible Alpha estimated a production of around 1.95 million tons. The mining company expects production in the next year to be between 1.65 and 1.8 million tons. The company stated that this is "mainly due to the decline in the grade of the world's largest copper mine, Escondida." In the iron ore business, BHP Billiton had previously estimated iron ore annual production for the past year to be between 2.58 and 2.69 billion tons. According to Visible Alpha's data, analysts' expectations were around 2.641 billion tons. BHP Billiton stated that it expects to produce between 2.6 and 2.72 billion tons of this steelmaking raw material in the coming year.
