According to Finance and Economics App, the Acting Director of Leisure and Cultural Services and Tourism Bureau Liu Zhen stated during a Legislative Council meeting today (July 15) that total box office revenue of Hong Kong theaters in the first half of 2026 increased by 25% compared to the first half of 2025; among them, the box office revenue of Hong Kong movies reached 286 million Hong Kong dollars, a 32% increase from the whole year of 2025. In fact, the total box office revenue of movies in 2025 was 1.131 billion Hong Kong dollars, close to the average overall box office revenue of 1.133 billion Hong Kong dollars in the previous five years (2020-2024). Compared to the pre-pandemic period, the total box office revenue of movies in 2025 decreased by about 41% compared to 19.23 billion Hong Kong dollars in 2019, but during the same period, the box office revenue of Hong Kong-produced films only decreased by about 14%, indicating that the main reason for the decline in total box office revenue of Hong Kong theaters is the lack of internationally popular films.
