SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son stated that in the not too distant future, nuclear fusion technology will become the most realistic solution to meet the growing power demands of artificial intelligence data centers. Currently, natural gas will still meet most of the power requirements for data centers, but he predicts that nuclear fusion will play a crucial role in the future, and he expects that by 2040, the global data center installed capacity will reach 3 terawatts (TW). Son said at SoftBank's annual "SoftBank World" conference in Tokyo, "Nuclear fusion will become a new, cheaper, cleaner, and safer source of energy on Earth. I believe that in another 15 years, nuclear fusion will replace natural gas." Son believes that the significant investment required to build data center infrastructure will ultimately pay off. He dismissed the increasing doubts from outsiders about whether the hundreds of billions of dollars invested in AI hardware will bring corresponding returns. "It is an extremely foolish question to question whether there is a bubble in AI," he said, adding that those who raise such questions do not understand AI and have not truly used AI extensively.
