Ian Ralby, Senior Fellow at the Maritime Strategies Center and President of Auxilium Worldwide, warned that the war between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz cannot be resolved through military means. He added that continued fighting will only drive up global fuel and food costs. One side is willing to continue fighting while the other is determined to undermine and weaken the other's capabilities, creating a formula for ongoing conflict. Unfortunately, this may mean that the Strait of Hormuz remains a long-term problem as a navigable waterway. Those affected by the conflict may push for the U.S. and Iran to resume diplomatic processes, but changing this dynamic will be difficult as both sides have entrenched interests in success and victory. Unfortunately, the U.S. has a very flexible concept of victory, while Iran now has a very clear desire for some form of retaliation for what has happened, leading to the idea of prolonged violent conflict.
