Affected by the high temperature, the retail industry in the UK is still under pressure.
A report released on Friday showed that the high temperatures have caused many shoppers to stay indoors, leading to a decline in retail sales in the UK in June. The latest report from the British Retail Consortium and retail technology company Sensormatic shows that total footfall in the UK decreased by 3.4% year-on-year in the five weeks from May 31 to July 5. Helen Dickinson, CEO of the British Retail Consortium, said, "Footfall on high streets saw the biggest decline, while shopping centers and retail parks with air conditioning showed greater resilience." The report stated that, in addition to the heatwave, consumer confidence remains low and broader geopolitical and economic uncertainties continue to weigh on spending for non-essential items.
