The Director of the National Economic Council at the White House, Hassett, criticized former Federal Reserve Chair Powell for continuing to stay at the Fed, hindering the government from nominating new Fed governors. "Jay Powell did not step down, which is extremely unusual," Hassett said. "It is very unusual for a former Fed chair to stay on." Previously, Hassett said, "Most of the people on the Federal Reserve board voted not out of patriotism, but because they wanted to see Trump out of office." He made these remarks in response to a question about whether he was concerned about certain members of the Fed. Currently, only one member of the Federal Reserve Board was nominated by Trump for re-election: the new Chair, Kevin Wash. Powell's term as governor lasts until January 2028, and he has stated that he will continue to stay on. Powell has expressed concerns about a politically motivated investigation into a Fed building project. In April of this year, he stated that he would resign "when I think it is appropriate."
