SK Hynix will build a large NAND flash wafer factory in Cheongju, Chungcheongnam-do, with the goal of starting operations in 2029. Including this project, the SK Group plans to invest a total of 170 trillion won in the Chungcheong region, covering advanced packaging and artificial intelligence data center fields, aiming to create a global AI hub. "We will build a new NAND wafer factory M17 with an investment of 80 trillion won in Cheongju, as well as an advanced packaging factory P&T7 with an investment of 20 trillion won," said SK Hynix CEO Gu Lu-zheng on Tuesday at the Chungcheong Advanced Industry Development Vision National Report Meeting held in Yasan, Chungcheongnam-do. "With a 1GW-level AI data center, our total investment in the Chungcheong region will reach 170 trillion won." The M17 factory site covers 158,000 square meters and is scheduled to start construction next year, with the goal of completion and production in the first half of 2029. SK Hynix CEO Gu Lu-zheng said, "With the full launch of AI services, the demand for NAND, high-bandwidth storage, and DRAM is exploding. On the other hand, there is a shortage of NAND supply, so it is necessary to expand production lines." NAND is no longer limited to simple data storage, but has become a core component that supports graphics processors and HBM, processes massive amounts of data, and enhances AI operation efficiency.
