New York City Mayor Mandani implements rent freeze policy, marking a milestone moment for New York renters.
The Rent Guidelines Board of New York City voted to freeze rents for approximately one million rent stabilized apartments, bringing a major political victory for Mayor Zolan Mandani and fulfilling a core campaign promise that helped him secure the mayor's office. Mandani had previously called for rent freezes multiple times, citing the pressure on tenants of rent stabilized apartments from rising costs of food, transportation, and other necessities, with wages not keeping pace with inflation. In recent months, there has been ongoing debate about whether landlords, despite facing financial pressures themselves, should still be required to shield tenants from skyrocketing housing expenses. This rent freeze policy will apply to leases signed between October 1, 2026 and September 30, 2027. The last one-year rent freeze policy was implemented during the pandemic in 2020.
