The Ministry of Ecology and Environment held its routine press conference for June today. The person in charge introduced that China adheres to precise, scientific, and legal pollution control, and the battle for clean water has achieved significant results. From January to May this year, the proportion of surface water of Class I-III quality in the country reached 88.0%, an increase of 2.4 percentage points compared to the same period last year. In the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the Yellow River Basin, the proportion of Class I-III water quality reached 90.9% and 88.0% respectively, increasing by 0.1 and 5.6 percentage points year-on-year. Jiang Huohua, Director of the Water Ecological Environment Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, stated that China has successfully achieved the main target indicators of the "14th Five-Year Plan" for the battle for clean water, with the proportion of surface water of Class I-III quality nationwide achieving a "ten-year consecutive increase" since the "13th Five-Year Plan". The proportion of the GDP in the Yangtze River Economic Belt region has increased from 42.2% ten years ago to 47.3%, with the proportion of Class I-III water quality increasing from 67% to over 90%. The main tributaries of the Yellow River Basin have largely eliminated Class V water quality, and the ecological foundation of the mother river has become increasingly bright. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the central government has allocated a total of 124.5 billion yuan in funds for water pollution prevention and control, supporting over 6,000 key engineering projects and providing strong support for basin ecological environmental protection work. China has now established a relatively complete water ecological environment standard system. Policies and systems such as the "Regulations on Supervision and Management of Sewage Outfalls into Rivers", the "Key Basin Water Ecological Environment Protection Plan", and horizontal ecological protection compensation mechanisms are continuously being improved. China continues to carry out special actions to control water pollution in industrial parks, and to carry out continuous actions to address urban black and smelly water bodies and environmental protection issues such as sewage and garbage collection and treatment. Black and smelly water bodies in prefecture-level and above cities have been largely eliminated, with over 90% of black and smelly water bodies in 397 county-level cities being eliminated. During the "15th Five-Year Plan" period, China will focus on solving a number of prominent water environment problems around the people within about 5 years, basically eliminating black and smelly water bodies in counties and townships, promoting the basic realization of water bodies around the people without color, odor, or foreign substances, and continuously enhancing the people's sense of attainment and happiness towards a beautiful water ecological environment.
