U.S. court rules Ohio can restrict children's use of social media.
An appeals court in the United States ruled on Thursday that Ohio can enforce a law requiring social media companies, including Instagram under Meta Platforms, to obtain parental consent before allowing children under 16 to use their platforms. The three-judge panel of the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati overturned a lower court ruling that had temporarily suspended the implementation of the law in response to a request from the technology industry trade group NetChoice, with a 2-1 vote. The panel determined that the law did not violate the free speech protections of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. NetChoice stated in a statement that the court's decision threatens the online privacy and constitutional rights of Ohio residents, but the organization "still fully believes that this unconstitutional law will ultimately be permanently repealed." Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
