Amazon (AMZN.O) is in talks to sell its self-developed artificial intelligence chips to other companies, signaling its efforts to further expand and challenge NVIDIA's dominant position. Peter DeSantis, head of Amazon's AI business, said, "We believe AI infrastructure is evolving rapidly. We have been looking for ways to serve more customers." Amazon introduced its AI accelerator chip Trainium in 2020. The chip has already attracted some heavyweight customers including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Uber, who use the hardware through Amazon Web Services (AWS). Amazon announced in April this year that Trainium had received revenue commitments of over $22.5 billion. CEO Andy Jassy stated in the same month that Amazon is "perfectly capable" of selling entire chip devices to third parties. This is also part of the company's strategic repositioning around AI. DeSantis mentioned that the third-generation Trainium chips, which started shipping earlier this year, are "essentially sold out." Amazon expects strong demand for the fourth-generation Trainium chips due to be launched next year.
