The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics released the economic performance of Beijing from January to May 2026, with data showing that the total market consumption in the city increased by 1.5% year-on-year during this period. Among them, service consumption increased by 4.5%, with information and transportation sectors experiencing rapid growth. The total retail sales of consumer goods in the society amounted to 546.9 billion yuan, a decrease of 2.5%. Breakdown of total retail sales of consumer goods in the society shows that retail sales of goods amounted to 494.27 billion yuan, a decrease of 2.8%; while catering revenue reached 52.63 billion yuan, an increase of 0.8%. Looking at the categories of goods, retail sales of gold, silver, and jewelry increased by 23.3% in wholesale and retail businesses exceeding the set quota, affected by the downward trend in gold prices; retail sales of new energy vehicle products increased by 4.1%, while wearable smart devices, high-energy efficiency household appliances, and audio-visual equipment all increased by more than 50%; sales of beverages and tobacco products related to basic daily life increased by 4.1% and 11.1% respectively; due to insufficient demand for traditional fuel vehicles, the retail sales of automobiles decreased by 17.3%.
