Swiss voters vetoed the proposal to introduce a population cap.
Switzerland has rejected a proposal to set a population cap at 10 million. The warning of economic damage that would result from the passage of this radical measure overshadowed concerns about immigration. The Swiss government said that in a nationwide vote on Sunday, 54% of Swiss voters were against the idea. Around 46% supported the initiative. Sunday's vote was the culmination of months of campaigning. During this time, right-wing groups claimed that rapid population growth in Switzerland was leading to overpopulation and putting pressure on the country's resources. The Swiss population is not far from the limit they proposed, having increased by nearly 2 million since the turn of the century to reach 9.1 million.
