U.S. officials are confident that they will sign a memorandum of understanding with Iran in the coming days.
According to multiple American media reports on the 12th, a senior US government official said that the US has "80% to 85%" confidence in signing a memorandum of understanding with Iran in the next few days. At the same time, the US is "confident" that Israel will support the US-Iran memorandum of understanding. According to reports from CNN and CBS, the official said in a phone briefing, "Although we have not yet reached the finish line, we are very close." The official said that the specific location and date for the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran have not yet been determined, but President Trump previously suggested signing in a European country, which is an option. The preliminary agreement includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the US maritime blockade against Iran, which will lead to Iran abandoning its nuclear program and allow the US to access Iran's enriched uranium. The preliminary agreement also includes a set of verification mechanisms to ensure that Iran's commitments are long-term. The official said that Iran has "committed indefinitely not to acquire or develop nuclear weapons", but the technical details of how to remove Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpile are still to be determined, and relevant discussions will be held in the next round of negotiations. Once both sides sign the memorandum of understanding, a 60-day "technical" negotiation process will begin. The official said that if Iran fulfills its obligations under the agreement, the US will relax most of the economic restrictions imposed on Iran for many years, allowing it to reintegrate into the world economy.
