Data released by the US Department of Labor on the 10th showed that due to the continued increase in energy costs, the US Consumer Price Index in May rose by 4.2% year-on-year, higher than the 3.8% in April, reaching the highest level since May 2023. The data also showed that excluding food and energy items, the US core CPI in May rose by 2.9% year-on-year, higher than the 2.8% in March, reaching the highest level in 7 months. The data shows that the month-on-month changes in CPI and core CPI in May were 0.5% and 0.2% respectively. The increase in energy prices contributed to over 60% of the CPI increase that month. Analysts believe that the latest inflation data means that American consumers are facing higher living costs, and will also put greater pressure on the monetary policy of the Federal Reserve.
