According to the American Columbia Broadcasting Corporation, two sources familiar with the incident revealed that the pilot of an F-15E fighter jet shot down over Iranian airspace had also piloted another aircraft in the early stages of the Iran War and had been shot down in a "friendly fire" incident by Kuwaiti forces. Just over 30 days after safely ejecting and escaping in the friendly fire incident, the pilot was once again on a mission to fly over Iran when the aircraft he was piloting was hit by an Iranian surface-to-air missile, leading to a daring rescue operation. "This is a very unusual coincidence," retired Air Force Major General David Deptula said. Deptula stated that he couldn't think of a single pilot who had been shot down in different accidental events in the same battle since the Vietnam War, "it's like being struck by lightning twice."
