Microsoft (MSFT.O) has announced the launch of an upgraded version of quantum computing chip and indicated that it is expected to develop a commercially viable quantum computer before 2029. The company unveiled the "Majorana 2" chip at the Build 2026 developer conference on Tuesday. This chip is a follow-up product to a previous research device that sparked controversy in the closely related field of quantum computing when it first appeared a year ago. Microsoft's new device has 12 quantum bits - the basic unit of quantum computing, an increase from the previous generation model which had 8. However, Microsoft stated that the main achievement lies in the fact that these quantum bits have a survival time of over 20 seconds. The company said that the quantum bits in the previous model would disappear in less than 12 milliseconds. Additionally, "Majorana 2" has replaced the aluminum connectors in the previous model with lead superconductors. "Given this rapid progress, we are accelerating our roadmap to achieve a scalable, practical quantum computer," said Chetan Nayak, Microsoft's technical fellow and executive in charge of quantum hardware. "We have shortened the timeline by half, and our current goal is to achieve this by 2029."
