Meta announced on Tuesday that it is expanding content control settings for its global teenage accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger to ensure that underage users have an age-appropriate user experience. Major social media platforms are facing increasingly strict regulatory scrutiny due to issues surrounding children's mental and physical health and safety. This control plan was first implemented in some countries in October last year with the aim of preventing minors from accessing inappropriate content. Meta has also introduced a new feature on Instagram to enrich the browsing experience for teenagers and prevent them from repeatedly seeing similar content. In April of this year, Meta warned investors that regulatory and litigation challenges surrounding teenage social products in Europe and the US may have a significant negative impact on the company's operations and financial performance. In a landmark lawsuit, a Los Angeles jury ruled on March 25th that Meta and its parent company Alphabet were at fault for their social media platform product designs harming the mental and physical health of minors. They were ordered to pay a total of $6 million to a 20-year-old female plaintiff who claimed to have been addicted to social media since childhood.
