More than 1,100 mathematics and science professors at the University of California are urging the board of directors to reinstate university entrance exams. They believe that underprepared students are lowering academic standards and consuming teaching resources. This request was made in a two-page letter submitted last week. The letter points out that students studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-related subjects are significantly less prepared. It states that nearly one-third of students taking calculus in their first semester at the University of California, Berkeley "show serious gaps in preparation." "Now we see that the gap in student preparation is so severe that teachers have to re-teach middle school mathematics on one hand and teach students the content needed in fields such as science, engineering, economics, and other areas that require high quantitative skills," the teachers wrote in the letter. "The resources of the University of California are limited and can only help a limited number of students."
