On May 26, 2026, local time, Wang Yi, member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, answered questions from the media on the spot after presiding over a high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council on "Maintaining the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centered International System." When asked about the current questioning of the Security Council's role in resolving conflicts and ending wars, and suggestions from China on how the Security Council can better fulfill its duties, Wang Yi said that despite the challenges of the past 80 years, the Security Council remains the core of the global collective security mechanism, bearing the primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security. However, it must be recognized that in recent years, the Security Council has been absent in major hot spot issues. Therefore, revitalizing the United Nations must begin with revitalizing the Security Council. In order to achieve this goal, all Security Council members must take the responsibility to maintain peace, abide by the Charter, uphold justice, and avoid acting in their own interests or fostering camp confrontations. Secondly, it is necessary to increase the voice of developing countries and small and medium-sized countries through reform, especially in addressing the historical injustices facing Africa. Thirdly, it is important to enhance the objectivity, fairness, and inclusivity of Security Council proposals, with the P5 playing a leading role in this. Fourthly, the international community should collectively resist unilateral actions that bypass the Security Council, ensuring that unilateral dominance has no market or legitimacy. As a permanent member of the Security Council, China is willing to work with all parties to promote the Security Council to better fulfill its responsibilities and effectively respond to the expectations of the international community.
