On the 26th local time, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, answered questions from the media on site after chairing the high-level meeting of the United Nations Security Council on "Safeguarding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the International System with the UN at its Core." When asked about China's evaluation of Secretary-General Guterres' work and its views on the next Secretary-General candidate, Wang Yi stated, "I have just had a friendly exchange with Secretary-General Guterres. Over the past nearly 10 years of his tenure, he has adhered to the concept of multilateralism, upheld the authority of the United Nations, worked for peace, and spoken out for justice, receiving widespread recognition and appreciation from the international community. We pay tribute to him with high respect. The election of the Secretary-General is related to the reform and development of the United Nations and the vital interests of member states. China believes that the next Secretary-General should meet at least a few key criteria: first, firmly defend the purposes and principles of the UN Charter; second, have rich political and diplomatic experience and comprehensive coordination capabilities; third, be fair in handling major issues, especially in prioritizing the interests and demands of developing countries; fourth, be able to grasp the direction of UN reform and promote the improvement of UN work. This can be summarized as: adhering to the Charter, outstanding capability, fairness and integrity, and fulfilling responsibilities. China will participate in the election process of the next Secretary-General with a responsible attitude along with everyone else."
