Mike Burgess, director-general of the Australian Security Intelligence Organization, argued during the Bondi Beach attack investigation hearing on the 25th that the agency was under immense pressure due to various security threats before the attack, but still had sufficient resources for counter-terrorism tasks. The agency had been criticized for shortcomings after the incident. The shooting targeting a Jewish festival on Bondi Beach in Sydney on December 14 last year resulted in the deaths of 16 people, including the gunman. Australian Prime Minister Albanese announced in January the establishment of a royal commission to investigate the attack and issues of anti-Semitism. The royal commission is Australia's highest-level public inquiry agency, and will submit its findings by December 14.
