In order to contain the spread of the deadly Ebola virus epidemic, Uganda has effectively closed its borders with the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. According to a statement released by Health Minister Diana Atwine, Uganda has suspended flights to and from Congo, and has completely stopped public transportation services including buses and ferries, only allowing transportation of goods and food. The government has also halted weekly markets in high-risk areas, where residents typically cross weak border controls for trade and purchasing essential goods.
