State Council Taiwan Affairs Office: The mainstream public opinion in Taiwan is for peace, development, communication, and cooperation.
On May 20th, the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office held a routine press conference. A reporter asked: The think tank of the Chinese Nationalist Party recently released a survey showing that 80.3% of the people in Taiwan believe that cross-strait issues should be resolved through peaceful negotiations, and 65% of the people agree to establish a "chain of peace and prosperity" to replace regional confrontation. What is your comment on this? Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian of the Taiwan Affairs Office: Seeking peace, development, communication, and cooperation is the mainstream public opinion in Taiwan. The Democratic Progressive Party authorities provoke confrontation by seeking for "independence" and rely on foreign forces, which goes against public opinion and is not popular. People on both sides of the strait are one family, and cross-strait affairs are family affairs that should be discussed among family members. We are willing to uphold the "1992 Consensus" and oppose "Taiwan independence" as the common political basis, and engage in dialogue and negotiations with various parties, groups, and individuals in Taiwan on the development of cross-strait relations and the future of the nation, to jointly maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, promote the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, and advance the process of peaceful reunification of the motherland.
