Oil tankers are large ships specifically designed for transporting crude oil or refined oil products. It is understood by reporters that the newbuilding market for oil tankers has been recovering since the second half of last year, and has further prospered this year. Oil tankers dominate a significant portion of new orders at many shipyards. The one-year charter rates for VLCCs have reached historic highs of around $100,000 per day after surpassing the previous record set in 1988. The market predicts a shortage of shipping capacity in the next 1 to 2 years, which will further drive new ship orders. Data shows that this year, 17 shipowners from around the world have placed orders for 91 VLCCs at 7 shipyards, totaling 27.99 million deadweight tons. Among them, Chinese shipyards have received orders for 83 vessels, totaling 25.59 million deadweight tons, accounting for 91.4% of the global total orders.
