Indonesian Finance Minister Pu'l Baya clarified at a press conference on the 24th that Indonesia will abide by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and will not charge fees to ships passing through the Strait of Malacca. Two days ago, Pu'l Baya stirred controversy by saying Indonesia was considering imposing fees on ships passing through the strait. Speaking at a seminar in Jakarta on the 22nd, Pu'l Baya said, "Indonesia is not a peripheral country. We are located on an important global trade and energy route, but ships passing through the Strait of Malacca are not charged." He also mentioned that Indonesia could consider a model similar to Iran's practice of charging passage fees to ships passing through the Hormuz Strait. This statement has attracted attention from the international community.
