Last week, the number of initial jobless claims in the United States increased slightly, but the current level of applications still corresponds to low levels of layoffs. According to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday, the number of initial jobless claims for the week ending April 18 increased by 6,000 to 214,000, with the market forecast at 210,000. This period coincides with the period referenced in the government's employment report for April. Continued jobless claims rose to 1.82 million. The number of initial claims remains near its lowest level since last year, which is consistent with recent data indicating that the labor market is stabilizing. According to a survey conducted in late March, about half of American workers are worried about losing their jobs, but the data on unemployment claims has not yet reflected a significant increase in layoffs.
