Who will become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations?
The United Nations General Assembly concluded a two-day interactive dialogue with the candidates for the next United Nations Secretary-General on the 22nd. The four candidates outlined their visions for the future development of the United Nations during the dialogue and answered questions from member state representatives and civil society representatives on leadership, climate change, sustainable development, international hotspots, and other topics. The term of the current UN Secretary-General, Antnio Guterres, will end at the end of this year, and the new Secretary-General will take office on January 1, 2027. As of now, there are four candidates running, including former President of Chile Michelle Bachelet, nominated jointly by Chile, Brazil, and Mexico, current Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi nominated by Argentina, economist and former Vice President of Costa Rica Rebeca Grynspan nominated by Costa Rica, and former President of Senegal Macky Sall nominated by Burundi. According to the schedule, the Security Council will begin the selection process for the candidates at the end of July this year. The Security Council will deliberate on the candidates, hold a straw poll, and ultimately determine a recommended candidate. After receiving the Security Council's nomination, the General Assembly will convene a plenary meeting to officially appoint the new United Nations Secretary-General.
