United Airlines announced that summer ticket prices will increase by up to 20%.
The situation in Iran has led to a sharp increase in aviation fuel prices, but passenger travel intentions remain strong. They are willing to pay higher costs to fly, so airlines have passed on more costs to consumers. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said on Wednesday that demand for summer ticket bookings is strong, allowing the company to raise prices by 15% to 20% during peak travel season. He said on Wednesday that part of the reason for the price increase is that aviation fuel costs have doubled since before the outbreak of the Iran situation. Fuel is the second largest expense for airlines after labor costs. Despite rising costs, United Airlines' profits in the last quarter were higher than the same period last year. Kirby said that in the first quarter of this year, United Airlines had passed on 40% to 50% of the increase in fuel costs through ticket prices. Thanks to strong ticket demand, he expects to cover all new fuel costs through further price increases later this year.
