CEO of Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a spinoff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Bob Mumgaard revealed that the company will officially begin construction of the world's first commercial nuclear fusion power plant in the United States in 2027. Mumgaard stated that the fusion validation machine SPARC, located in Massachusetts, is over 75% complete and is expected to be officially launched in 2027. The device is designed to achieve "net energy gain," meaning that the energy generated by fusion exceeds the energy consumed by the starting reaction, which is a key step in verifying the commercial viability of fusion technology. The core component of SPARC, 18 "D"-shaped superconducting magnets, is planned to be fully installed this summer, capable of generating magnetic fields up to 20 Tesla.
